European Union

  • The European Union is a supranational union of 25 European states: Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, and the UK.
  • Collectively, it is the largest 'single' economy in the world consisting of a single market, a single currency and a customs union.
  • EU citizens are afforded extensive rights and privileges which they can enjoy in most of the member states.
  • In the European Union education is the responsibility of each member state.
  • EU-funded educational, vocational and citizenship-building programmes help more than 100,000 EU citizens each year take advantage of opportunities which the EU offers its citizens.
  • The EU is moving towards increased cooperation in terms of common defence and foreign policy making it a politicaly stable and strong entity.
  • The EU does not set a minimum wage for its member states, however, the average income and standard of living is said to be relatively high.
  • Health care in the EU is of a very high standard. Although not uniform, each member state is free to offer free health care to its citizens like the UK.
